Every Month

  • Press the test button on every smoke and carbon monoxide detector.
  • Make sure everyone in your household recognizes the alarm sound.
  • Check that nothing is blocking or covering the detectors.

Every Six Months

  • Replace the batteries if your detectors use replaceable batteries, or follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Gently remove dust from the detector using a soft brush or a vacuum attachment if recommended by the manufacturer.

Every Year

  • Review your home’s emergency escape plan with everyone in your household.
  • Verify that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed in appropriate locations throughout your home.
  • Replace any detector that is damaged or not operating properly.

Replace When Needed

  • Replace detectors according to the manufacturer’s recommended service life.
  • Replace any detector that repeatedly fails testing, has been damaged, or no longer functions properly.
