Tripped Breaker Guide

A tripped circuit breaker is designed to help protect your home’s electrical system. Resetting it may restore power, but repeated tripping can indicate a more serious problem that should be inspected by a qualified professional.

What To Do Immediately

  1. Identify the affected area.

Determine which lights, outlets, or appliances have lost power.

  2. Locate your electrical panel.

Open the panel and look for a breaker that is in the “Off” position or sitting between “On” and “Off.”

  3. Reset the breaker once.

If it is safe to do so, firmly switch the breaker completely to the “Off” position and then back to the “On” position.

  4. Do not continue resetting the breaker.

If the breaker trips again or you notice burning odors, sparks, buzzing sounds, or signs of damage, leave it off and avoid using the affected circuit.

  5. Contact a Verified Contractor.

Find a Verified Local Electrician through Johnson County Trusted Contractors who can inspect the problem and discuss repair options.

Safety First

Never remove the cover from your electrical panel or attempt electrical repairs unless you are qualified to do so. If you see smoke, sparks, or fire, leave the area immediately and contact emergency services. Personal safety should always come before protecting property.
