Storm Safety – After the Storm

What To Do First

1. Check for Immediate Hazards
Look for downed power lines, the smell of gas, standing water near electrical equipment, damaged trees, and structural damage before walking around your property.
2. Check on Your Family and Neighbors
Make sure everyone is safe, especially older adults, young children, and anyone who may need assistance.
3. Document Visible Damage
If it is safe to do so, take photographs of damage to your home, vehicles, and other property before beginning cleanup.
4. Prevent Additional Damage
If it can be done safely, take reasonable temporary steps to reduce further damage, such as moving belongings away from leaks or covering broken windows.
Safety First
Never approach downed power lines, enter floodwaters, or enter a building that appears structurally unsafe. If you suspect a gas leak or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the area and contact your utility company or emergency services. Personal safety should always come before protecting property.
