HVAC Maintenance Checklist

Regular HVAC maintenance can help your heating and cooling system operate more efficiently and may extend its service life. A few simple maintenance tasks throughout the year can also help identify potential issues before they become costly repairs.

Monthly

  • Check and replace the air filter if needed.
  • Make sure all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed.
  • Listen for unusual noises while the system is running.

Spring (Cooling Season)

  • Clear leaves, grass, and debris from around the outdoor unit.
  • Trim vegetation to provide adequate airflow around the condenser.
  • Check the thermostat to make sure it is operating properly.
  • Turn on your air conditioner before hot weather arrives to confirm it is cooling properly.

Fall (Heating Season)

  • Test your heating system before the first cold front.
  • Replace the air filter if needed.
  • Make sure furniture or storage items are not blocking vents.
  • Listen for unusual odors or sounds when the heater starts for the season.

Throughout the Year

  • Keep the area around your indoor and outdoor HVAC equipment clean.
  • Watch for unusually high energy bills that may indicate your system needs attention.
  • If your system isn’t heating or cooling properly, have it inspected before a small issue becomes a larger repair.

Helpful Reminder

Changing your HVAC filter regularly is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help your system perform efficiently. Check your manufacturer’s recommendations for the appropriate filter size and replacement schedule.
