Burst Pipe Emergency Guide

A burst pipe can cause significant water damage in just a few minutes. Acting quickly may help reduce water damage until professional repairs can be made.

What To Do Immediately

  1. Shut off the water.

Turn off your home’s main water supply as quickly as possible.

  2. Turn off electricity if necessary.

If water is near electrical outlets, appliances, or your breaker panel, avoid the area and turn off power only if it is safe to do so.

  3. Move valuables.

Remove furniture, electronics, rugs, and other items from standing water if you can do so safely.

  4. Reduce water damage.

If it is safe to do so, use towels, buckets, or a wet/dry vacuum to remove as much standing water as possible. If conditions allow, increase airflow by opening windows or using fans to help begin the drying process.

  5. Contact a Verified Contractor.

Find a Verified Local Plumber through Johnson County Trusted Contractors who can inspect the problem and discuss repair options.

Safety First

Never enter areas where water may be in contact with electrical equipment. If you’re unsure whether an area is safe, stay out of the area and contact your utility company, emergency services, or a qualified contractor as appropriate. Personal safety should always come before protecting property.
